Q: You were at Augusta to see your brother win his third greenjacket. Being able to help a kid whocomes in at 18 years old and turn him into a man in four yearswho’s ready for the real world - whether he plays professionallyor not - there’s a lot of reward to that. I just reallyenjoy being able to be there when they need me-not just for golfsituations but for life situations. Q: What is it about coaching that you love so much?Ī: I almost look at it as being a big brother. It so happenedthat the day after I got done with the second stage of (the PGATour National Qualifying Tournament in 2001), I was able to go helpmy friend (Dale Walker) at San Diego State as a volunteer coach andI fell in love with it immediately. Iwas not willing to do that for 10 years just to try and make it.Thankfully I realized early that I wasn’t willing to put 100percent into it, so I got out.Ī: I knew I wanted to stay in the golf industry.

I just didn’t likestaying at cheap motels and eating cheaply just to save money.

I put 40,000 miles on my Mustang over about afour-month period playing on the Hooters Tour. Why didn’tyou pursue a career as a touring pro?Ī: I played one year as a pro, and I just didn’t enjoy travelingacross the country. Q: Your amateur career is certainly a decorated one. You can haveindividual goals, but as long as they put the team goals first,we’re going to be very successful. If you have good chemistry, you have everyone onthe same page as to what the goals are from the team. When we go on the road for 72 hours and everyone likeseach other, everyone is going to be in a better mood when they wakeup to go compete. Why is that so important?Ī: I think chemistry is a lot more important than some coachesbelieve. Q: Even though golf is an individual sport, you put a lot ofstock in team chemistry. And just in general theybelieve in their ability. We don’t have a weak spot and thatgoes a long way in a sport like golf. So basically anytime we go out and play atournament, any of them can win. We’ve had five different individualswin a tournament.
